How to Hire for Unreal Gameplay Ability System Work
Co-development studio, outstaffing vendor, or specialist contractor. They are three different instruments and the market talks about them as if they were one. This guide states what each is actually built for, names real vendors in each category with what they publish about themselves, and says plainly where each one is the better call than the others, including where they are a better call than we are.
The Short Answer
The deciding question is how many disciplines your problem crosses, not how big your budget is and not how big the vendor is.

- Sustained capacity across a roadmap. You know what to build, you have the architecture, you need more hands inside your own process for a long time. This is a capacity problem. An outstaffing vendor is the right instrument.
Most bad vendor decisions in this market are category errors, not quality errors. The vendor was good and it was the wrong shape of vendor.
Three Different Shapes
The three words get used interchangeably in sales material. They describe genuinely different arrangements of ownership.

The category error
Teams routinely buy capacity when they have a depth problem. Adding three mid-level engineers to a codebase whose authority model was never designed does not fix the authority model; it produces three more systems built against the missing decision. Depth problems get worse with headcount, not better.
Side — Global Co-Development at Scale
Side, formerly Pole To Win and rebranded in March 2025, was founded in 2009, is headquartered in London and employs roughly 2,000 people across more than 15 studios in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Its published service lines are quality assurance, localization, audio production, co-development, art services and datasets. Where Side beats a specialist contractor, unambiguously:
- Multi-discipline staffing. If the gap is engineering and audio and localization and QA, one company covers all of it under one contract. No solo contractor can do this at any price.
- Scale and continuity. Roughly two thousand people means a named risk (illness, departure, a slipped date) does not stop your project. A single contractor is a single point of failure and you should price that risk honestly.
- Procurement credibility. A publicly listed parent and a shipped-title list that includes titles of that profile clears enterprise procurement and legal review in a way an individual contractor frequently cannot.
Choose Side when the problem is organisational breadth. The trade is that you are buying a company's capability, and which specific engineers land on your project is an allocation decision made after you sign.
Juego Studios — Outstaffing and Full-Cycle
Juego Studios publishes three engagement models (outstaffing, dedicated team and co-development) and claims 10+ years in production, 50+ publishers served, 200+ shipped titles and 250+ engineers, artists and QA. Its Unreal hiring page is unusually specific about technical territory, naming replication architecture, RPC workflows, dedicated servers and session management, alongside Lumen, Nanite and Niagara tuning, console TRC/TCR readiness, and Unreal Insights profiling.
Where Juego beats a specialist contractor:
- Full-cycle capability. Art, design, engineering, QA and production under one roof means they can own an entire title, which a single systems engineer cannot.
- Headcount elasticity. If the honest answer is that you need four engineers in parallel for six months, a vendor that can staff four engineers is simply the correct answer.
- Console compliance work. TRC/TCR readiness is grinding, checklist-driven, multi-person work. It is a capacity problem by nature.
Note that Juego's published territory genuinely overlaps a systems specialist's: replication architecture and Insights profiling are named explicitly. The distinction is not capability on paper, it is whether you are buying a company or a specific engineer.
Whimsy Games — Full-Cycle Outsourcing
Whimsy Games states 75 professionals and 8 years in the industry, offering full-cycle development with flexible engagement models on a per-hour or custom-agreement basis. Its Clutch profile lists the company as founded in 2016, headquartered in London with offices in Kyiv, Rancho Cordova and San Pedro del Pinatar, and a services breakdown weighted to AR/VR development, mobile app development and UX/UI design.
Where Whimsy beats a specialist contractor:
- Full-cycle production for a small or mid-size title, where you want one partner to take the whole thing rather than a system.
- AR/VR and mobile work, which their published service mix is genuinely weighted toward.
- Team volume and design-plus-art breadth alongside engineering.
Verify specialisation yourself
As of September 2026, Whimsy's own Unreal Engine services page does not mention the Gameplay Ability System, multiplayer replication or networked combat anywhere on it, and its Clutch service breakdown is led by AR/VR, mobile and UX/UI rather than game engineering. That is an observation about what a company publishes, not a judgement about what its engineers can do. But if GAS is your actual problem, ask directly and ask for the specific engineer's track record.
The Specialist Contractor
The fourth shape, and the one this site is. A single senior engineer who owns one system end to end and hands it back documented, so the team can extend it without the contractor.
Where this wins:
- You talk to the engineer doing the work, before you sign and throughout. There is no allocation step and no account-management layer between the decision and the person implementing it.
- Depth on a narrow territory (Gameplay Ability System architecture, replication, networked combat) rather than general Unreal capability. The GAS migration, server-authority and architecture audit case files document what that territory looks like in practice.
- Architecture decisions get written down and handed over, because the deliverable is a system your team owns rather than an ongoing dependency.
Where this loses, and you should hire one of the above instead:
- The work crosses disciplines. One engineer is not an art pipeline, an audio team or a QA department.
- You need guaranteed continuity across a multi-year production. One person is one point of failure.
- Procurement requires a vendor of a certain size, certification or insurance profile.

What to Ask Before Signing
These questions separate vendors regardless of category, and the third one separates them more than any other.
- Who specifically will be on this project, and can I talk to them before signing? Company capability and assigned-engineer capability are different quantities. Ask for the second one.
- What have they shipped on GAS and replication specifically? Not Unreal generally: Unreal is a large engine and most of it is not this.
- What replication mode would you use for our players and our AI, and why? An engineer who has done this answers immediately and explains the bandwidth reasoning. An engineer who has not will describe the options without choosing.
- What happens when I stop paying? Ask whether you get a documented system your team can extend, or a dependency. Ask to see a redacted example of the handoff documentation.
- What is explicitly out of scope? A vendor who cannot name what they are not doing has not scoped the work.
